Snow Days... A Finish!

Yes indeed! My goal was to get this Snow Days to a finished top by the end of February... and here we are... on the 28th... *grin*

I apologize for the crumby pictures... but my yard is a mess from real snow... so these were taken in my living room (on the floor)...

The entire top...
 Lower left corner...
 Lower right corner...
 Upper left corner...
 Upper right corner...
There are a few areas in the quilt where the embroidery extends into a pieced block. Here is a close-up of one of those sections...
I'm actually at a loss of what more to say... I guess maybe I'm in a state of disbelief right now... lol! There were so many times during this process that I almost gave up. Prior to my signing up for this BOM, the only "piecing" experience I had was hand sewing squares together to make a table top quilt. And use of my 20 year old Kenmore sewing machine was limited only to being used to stay stitch the edges of my hooked rugs before binding...

It was Jacque of thedoodlesofmymind blog that brought this pattern to my attention back in 2010. Yes. That long ago! lol! Jacque is an experienced quilter, so she went to her LQS and chose her own fabrics. I had no clue what I was doing, so I signed on to this as a BOM from The Quilted Crow in MA with the thought that having them choose the fabrics for me would make this an easier process. And, it was. I learned so much about how fabrics "play with" the other fabrics once pieced.

Jacque and I started the embroidered sections of the blocks in 2011 and were stitching right along pretty smoothly... then I got intimidated by the piecing, so I put everything on the back burner... while Jacque went ahead and did some of her piecing. From 2011 until 2013 I watched numerous YouTube videos and read many books and blogs on piecing. Then practiced and practiced some more with my little Kenmore... trying to keep that scant 1/4" seam accurate so that all my blocks finished up at the proper size... and, finally... I got brave enough to start the actual piecing of Snow Days.... lol! Then, once I finished one section of blocks... I was eager to get to the next section... and the next.... until it was full steam ahead for a completion!

Whew! I can't believe I actually finished this quilt top! :-)

A big thank you to everyone that followed along with me on this quilt... having some cheerleaders with encouraging comments really did help me to keep trying! :-)

You can bet a big bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs that my next few projects will be pretty durn small ones! lol! ;-)

Snow Days Blocks 12, 13 and 14

Oh yes I did!!! :-) All embroidered sections now have their pieced blocks attached to them! Yippeeee!

Block 12...
Block 13...
Block 14...

And, true to superstition... the cutting mistake of the quilt happened on Block 13! lol! I was being so careful (with ALL of these embroidered blocks) to cut them in the correct position to the pieced blocks. Well... when a person just looks at the pictures and then cuts... things don't always work out... so, after I looked at the picture, I made the bottom cut (then measured up) and then I noticed too much empty space above the embroidery on the top... well... that's because the "words part" of the instructions says to add 3" extra space beyond the bottom guideline and then cut! *ACK* Soooooo... after 30 seconds of panic and saying "Ain't no way I'm going to embroider that WHOLE block over again..."... I very calmly took the piece I cut off out of the trash.... and sewed that bugger back on again! lol! You can see the seam... but, I'll be adding more embroidery to that space...

So... the moral of the story is... no matter what happens...

"Keep Calm... and Quilt on"!!!

Snow Days Blocks 9, 10 and 11

And yet again... it snowed. This morning we awoke to an additional 4" of the fresh, fluffy white stuff... however... TODAY's difference is that the sun shined brightly and the temperature warmed to 42 degrees (F)... ahhhhhh.... and the forecast for the next 4 days is increasing temps until we reach a gorgeous 55 degrees (F) with sunshine this coming Saturday!!! Nothing like the sound of melting snow to put a Spring in my step!

And some zing in my sewing machine too! lol! ;-)

Here is Block 9...
Block 10...
Block 11...

Just 3 more Blocks to go folks... and then it is assembly time! :-)

Snow Days Blocks 6, 7 and 8

Well... it's snowing (for real) again here... so it seems appropriate to post an update on the Snow Days quilt! lol!

Block 6...

Block 7...

Block 8...

This afternoon (while it's snowing again), I'll be indoors prepping the fabrics for the next set of Snow Days Blocks... and maybe I'll prep some (warm) woolie pieces for the next Tavern House Block...

Clicking my heels...

Spring will soon be here...

Spring will soon be here...

Spring will soon be here...

lol!

My Two Houses

Yah... right... I can only WISH I had a second house in a warmer climate! lol! I'm talking about Tavern House and Wisdom House... my two house QUILTS! ;-)

First up is Tavern House Block #2. This is an all wool version and I've whip stitched the edges with a single strand of coordinating DMC.

While stitching on this, I'm thinking that some decorative embroidery stitches might perk it up a bit... so, I'll wait until I finish all of the blocks and then go back and embellish away!

I also have my Wisdom House Quilt back from being longarm quilted... I've had it for a while now... was hoping to have the binding on it before sharing pics... but, the binding is taking me a while and who knows when this snow will disappear so I can get some full length pics outside... so, here's a couple of close-ups, just so you can see the quilting. I requested an overall design rather than custom as I feel there is enough to look at with the applique... and custom quilting may have made the quilt too busy. It's a pantograph called Forest Floor. The quilting was done by Karen Thompson of Poppy Court Quilting.

So there you have it... call it "101 ways to keep your mind off the fact that it's snowing AGAIN"... or call it just plain ol' fun... either way... I'm very happy to have all these little projects to keep me busy indoors until Spring arrives! :-)

Snow Days Block 5 Outer Border & Center Section

OK. So. I'll be the first to admit that piecing can become an addiction... and rather than resist... I continued on to Block 5... *grin*

Here is the embroidered Block 5 together with it's pieced parts...

And here is Part 5 of the Center Section...

I now have all parts of the Inner Section complete, so I can put them all together.

Did you notice that there is some sunlight shining on the embroidery in the first picture? Yes... sunshine is the saving grace to all this snow and cold we've been getting. :-)

Tavern House Block 2 is almost complete... so, check back in a day or two for some pictures!

Until next time... stay healthy & keep on smiling!

Got Snow?

Well... at least this waited until AFTER the Super Bowl... and... even though I've had my fill of clearing snow from the sidewalk and driveway... even I have to admit, it sure looks pretty outside!

We already have another Winter Storm Warning posted for tonight... though this one will be more of a rain and freezing rain event... so, hopefully today's mid-30's (F) temps will melt some of this heavy stuff from the tree branches...

In the meantime... here's a picture of another inside section of the center grouping of squares from the Snow Days quilt saga...

I'll be stitching on a wool project today (Tavern House)... if for no other reason, the wool will help keep me warm! lol! :-)

Until next time...
